Whether you consider the BMW X2 a small SUV or a tall hatchback, it’s an edgy and entertaining alternative to the typical subcompact-luxury crossover.
The 2025 BMW X2 is a sleeker and sportier interpretation of the more conventional subcompact X1 SUV, with a tapering roofline that creates a coupe-like silhouette. It follows the path set by the BMW X6 way back in 2008, which gave a similar treatment to the conventional square-roof X5 SUV of the time. This second-generation X2 is fresh off a complete redesign last year. It again offers a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines of 241 and 312 horsepower, respectively, and standard all-wheel drive. It looks more aggressive than it drives, and the price of the top-spec M35i version overlaps with the more driver-friendly BMW X3. There is this, though: unlike other SUVs of the coupe-ish ilk, you won’t have to sacrifice too much in the way of practicality for the extra dollop of style. Cargo capacity is nearly identical to that of the square-roof X1, but rear passengers will have to give up a couple of inches of headroom. While BMW started the whole coupe-like SUV category, virtually all of its rivals have followed and now offer similar takes such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and Range Rover Evoque.
What’s New for 2025?
After a full redesign last year, the BMW X2 returns with only minor additions. Heated front seats and a wifi hotspot trial subscription are now standard.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 BMW X2 starts at $44.025 and goes up to $53.475 depending on the trim and options.

The xDrive28i comes with plenty of standard features, such as 19-inch wheels, a large infotainment display, LED headlights, and active blind spot detection. While the X2’s extroverted styling begs for maximum performance, and the M35i trim boosts horsepower to 312 ponies and brings with it even racier styling elements, we prefer the less frenetic standard xDrive28i. From our experience with a similarly equipped X1 M35i, we think that XDrive28i’s calmer suspension and still-responsive handling make it a nicer all-around daily driver. The less powerful engine proved to be plenty quick enough in our testing and in real-world driving.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The X2 xDrive28i is powered by a 241-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine bolted to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the M35i xDrive is the hot-rod X2. With upgraded engine internals and extra boost pressure, the turbo four produces 312 horsepower in the M35i. Both engines suffer from turbo lag, taking a second to spool up full boost when you boot the throttle. Both versions of the X2 come standard with all-season tires, but the M35i xDrive gets larger 20-inch wheels. Top speed is limited to 130 mph for both models while equipped with all-season rubber, but upgrading to performance summer rubber increases the M35i’s top speed to 155 mph. Cornering grip is merely adequate, even on the summer tires, and the steering is precise but it is light on feedback. The xDrive28i is less fun to drive aggressively than the M35i, but more comfortable on the daily commute.
