HIGHS
Plush cabin materials, exhilarating power, thinks it’s a sports sedan.
LOWS
Sloped roofline constricts rear visibility, headroom and cargo space are less than in the X5 M, rides rough on less-than-pristine roads.
VERDICT
The X6 M is a brute-ute that exerts its dominance on the road with cool precision and an abundance of luxury.

It’s an SUV, it’s got rocket-powered legs, and it handles like it thinks it’s an overgrown sports car. This delicious combination describes the 2025 BMW X6 M, a slope-backed version of the conventionally shaped X5 M SUV. The X6 M is very powerful and very quick, with a cheeky attitude that more than overcomes any body-style confusion. Endowed with a 48-volt mild-hybrid twin-turbo V-8 that’s anything but mild, the X6 M cranks out 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Against competitors like the 591-hp Audi RS Q8 and the 650-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe, the X6 M asserts itself in the mid-size performance-SUV class with an exclamation point. The X6 M’s fastback roofline impacts cargo space but the sloping silhouette is racy and distinctive. It doesn’t hurt that the cabin is draped in luxurious materials, either. BMW’s engineers have created an SUV that’s ready to rip but is also just tame enough to drive every day—an SUV rife with the sporting attitude that defines the best of the brand’s M performance vehicles.

What’s New for 2025?

BMW refreshed the X6 M for 2024, crisping up the exterior for a more aggressive look. The 27.2-inch curved center screen was new last year, as was the mild-hybrid V-8 setup. For 2025, the brand is taking a beat to let those changes marinate and we don’t expect any additional updates.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2025 BMW X6 M starts at $133.275.
X6 M Competition: $133,275

It’s hard to fathom how less practicality can command a higher price. Still, the 2025 X6 M costs more than its squareback counterpart, the X5 M. We prefer the less expensive body style, but the X6 certainly attracts more attention. As of 2024, every X6 M built is a Competition model. That means every X6 M gets the same 617 horsepower from the hybridized twin-turbo V-8 engine along with an adaptive M suspension, 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels, a panoramic roof, Harman Kardon audio system, a drive recorder, and a slew of safety tech. We’d be inclined to spec our X6 M in the brilliant Isle Of Man Green Metallic, riding on M star-spoke bi-color wheels. For a comprehensive luxury setup, tick the box for the Executive Package to add features like soft-close automatic doors, LED lighting for the panoramic roof, heated-and-cooled cupholders, front ventilated massaging seats, front and rear heated seats, and rear manual side window shades.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The X6 M is motivated by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that’s paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which incorporates an electric motor mounted within the eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is the same 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque generated by earlier, non-hybrid Competition models. We haven’t run the newer hybridized version through our instrumented testing regimen, but we expect the performance to at least match or exceed prior models. During our previous drive in the X6 M Competition, we lauded its lightning-quick acceleration, staggering cornering grip, and strong, fade-free brakes. While it rode acceptably smooth on the highway, its large wheels and stiff springs contributed to a rocky ride on uneven roads. We appreciate the fact that this drivetrain can be told to distribute power to all four wheels for maximum traction or have most of it sent rearward for sharper handling. In addition to its multiple selectable drive modes, including customizable settings that can be activated via steering-wheel-mounted buttons, the X6 M even features adjustable brake-pedal feedback. The BMW also has standard adaptive dampers and a set of staggered wheels measuring at 21-inches in front and 22-inches in the rear.
