Overview
The BMW X3 helped launch the compact luxury crossover segment when it was introduced in 2004 and has become the manufacturer’s best-selling model. The new, fourth-generation 2025 X3 continues that solid track record with incremental updates and improvements that refine rather than reinvent the genre. All-wheel drive is standard for 2025, and the performance-focused M40i is replaced by the M50. (Importantly, BMW is dropping the “i” from its model names for its gas-powered vehicles from now on, keeping the letter for use only on its EVs.) BMW is also carefully mixing in new technology, including more audio and video streaming services and some gaming options for entertainment while parked. Four- and inline-six powertrains return, but both get a mild-hybrid component and a slight boost in output. The all-electric iX3 will arrive later, built on an entirely different platform, and will co-exist with the new X3. A plug-in hybrid has yet to be confirmed for the American market, but given America’s renewed interest in hybrids of all kinds, we’d be surprised if it didn’t join the lineup. What hasn’t changed is the X3’s tasteful luxury appointments, refined ride-handling balance, and its position as a stylish, right-sized compact crossover in one of the hottest segments. One of our favorites in the segment, the BMW X3 earned a spot on our 2025 Editors’ Choice list.
