What’s better than a luxurious Mercedes midsize SUV? One with AMG-fettled powertrain and chassis. The automaker’s celebrated tuning arm offers such a vehicle, both based on the GLE-class: The GLE53 has a 429-hp turbocharged inline-six, and the GLE63 S turns things up with a 603-hp twin-turbo V-8; the former hits 60 in 4.4 seconds, the latter in 3.4. Both have a fancy suspension system that reduces body roll using power from the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. And lest you think these road rockets are all play and no work, know that they can pull an impressive 7700 pounds—quickly. Buyers looking to add some style to their speed can opt for the slinky coupe-like body style in either model, and standard luxury features include heated and ventilated front seats, a Nappa leather sports steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. Competitors abound, from the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 to the BMW X5 M and X6 M to various Porsche Cayenne models. There must be something in the water over in Germany.
What’s New for 2025?
Four new paint colors join the exterior palette this year: Silicon Grey, Ireland Mid Green Metallic, Mystic Blue Metallic, and Cote d’Azur Light Blue Metallic. Inside, three new nappa leather upholstery colors are available: Carmine Red, Yacht Blue, and Truffle Brown. All models now come with an embroidered AMG crest on the head rests and a biometric finger-print sensor for security.
