2025 BMW X5M Overview

2025 BMW X5 M
HIGHS
Scintillating performance from its twin-turbo V-8, physics-defying handling, elegant, tech-laden interior.
LOWS
Extremely firm ride, not suitable for use once the pavement ends, incredibly pricey.
VERDICT
It hauls ass as well as it hauls people and their stuff, and does so with all of the athleticism and performance promised by its M badge.
As sports sedans disappear faster than velociraptors after an asteroid impact, the 2025 BMW X5 M Competition is the sort of vehicle that replaces them: a sporting SUV from an automaker that long-ago mastered the sports sedan. And while it might seem ridiculous to trade a sports sedan with a low center of gravity for a performance-oriented SUV with a higher one, well, you haven’t climbed in the saddle of this bad boy. Its performance-tweaked underpinnings play host to a thrillingly potent 617-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. It’s rapid transit of the first order, unleashing massive power and athleticism that seem impossible in a vehicle that can hold the whole brood and their lifestyle debris. It’s as if the X5 M defies multiple laws of physics. How can a practical vehicle be this much fun to drive? It’s supported by BMW’s iDrive 8 infotainment system, residing behind a curved screen that also houses digital gauges and various vehicle readouts that help make driving the BMW X5 M Competition an extremely fun and pulse-quickening experience.
What’s New for 2025?
Having received an interior and exterior makeover for 2024, the fourth-generation BMW X5 M remains unchanged for 2025.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 BMW X5 M starts at $128.375.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Two turbochargers pump oxygen into the heart of this beast, a 4.4-liter V-8 which feeds its output through a ZF 8-speed transmission and an electric motor that generates an added 12 horsepower and 148 pound-feet as part of a 48-volt mild hybrid system that also acts as a starter-generator. Altogether, there’s 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque sent to the all-wheel drive system. It provides the option of having more agility in the rear-biased Track mode for maximum traction for added playfulness in corners. Adaptive dampers are standard. Having driven the BMW X5 M prior to its 2024 facelift, we can testify to its potent acceleration, which generates g-forces strong enough to drive your molars into your shoulder blades. It corners as if it’s a sports sedan. We’ll have more information on its dynamic capabilities as soon as we evaluate the revised version.
0–60-MPH Times
